Southern- style cabbage (with onions, vinegar, sugar, cayenne, nutmeg, salt) and mashed potatoes (with lots of Earth Balance and some Tofutti "Better Than Sour Cream").

This was yesterday's breakfast: grits! And Lilly had a dog chew.
Today's item TBD.

Today I took my grandma to New Yokel Market for lunch. We had potato-leek soup and cornbread.

Grandma says she likes Obama, but thinks that he's bitten off more than he can chew. We both hope that he can get most of his promises/plans accomplished in four years!

I forgot/was too busy to post anything for the past two days! So... here are the lovely and oh-so-interesting things I've been consuming:

Chocolate Soymilk:

Louisiana Red Grapefruit:
Because I keep forgetting to take photos and cursing myself as I swallow a last bite, I just took a picture of an empty sandwich wrapper and bottle. The sandwich was terrific, from my favorite Hattiesburg/hometown restaurant, New Yokel Grocery.

Red, white, and blue snacks. Many theme-dressed in Obama shirts and buttons today, but I was a theme-eater in honor of his inauguration.

Palak Paneer (with tofu "paneer") and Basmati rice.

Fresh spinach, coconut milk, standard Indian spice mixture: curry powder, cardamom, cumin, turmeric, coriander, pinch of cinnamon.

There's no method to this madness. I just stir fried the tofu for a bit in olive oil to brown it/ toughen it up before adding and sauteing the spinach in coconut milk and spices.

Chili Dog! Jumbo Smart Dog, Whole Foods brand Spicy Vegetarian Chili, organic yellow mustard, whole wheat bun.

Lightline, the company that makes Smart Dogs, has pledged to use less eggs in their recipes starting in 2009. Less eggs in recipes = more vegan packaged food items.

Normally I don't eat a lot of packaged food items or fake meats, but every now and again I want something messy and junk-foody, such as this here chili dog.

And for those other people out there, more attractive vegan options in grocery aisles = more vegan meals, even for consumers who are not vegans. This is good.

"Soul Chicken Dinner" at the new vegetarian restaurant in town, Cafe Bamboo. I actually forgot to take a picture of my own food, so this photo appears thanks to Kelsey's willingness to approach the accommodating strangers at the next table.

Red (pink?) navel orange from the farmers market.

Southern-fried tofu, sauteed mustard greens, spicy potato wedges.

I really like soy yogurt, and I found this brand for the first time today at Whole Foods. I like the coconut-milk based 'ice cream' that they make, so thought I'd try out the soy yogurt. I'm excited to try the Lemon Drop and Cinnamon Roll flavors. I hope it's So Delicious!

There is a new career counselor in the law school Career Development Office, and she's a vegan! To welcome her/ celebrate the arrival of someone with whom I can swap recipes, I baked chocolate chip cookies for the CDO staff.

Not such a great photo, but the soup was good. It's an Indian-inspired lentil concoction with the consistency of butternut squash soup or cream of something-or-other.

Looks like I'm on a simple carb kick... comfort food for the weekend, I suppose.

Plus, I forgot to take a picture of the super veggie pizza at lunch today.
Popcorn and a movie (Man on Wire: I loved it, but don't take my word for it. Read this review).

Simple, basic soup: barley, carrots, turnips, chard, onion, garlic.

Thai dinner in the Marigny with Student Hurricane Network folks... read more about SHN here: studentjustice.org . The food was superb: veggie pad thai and veggie spring rolls.

Chard!

Tuesday is Farmers Market day! The market is conveniently located across the street from the dog park, so Lilly and I had a very exciting morning.

This woman's husband asked her to help him out at the market. She was doing all the food-selling at their table. While I was waiting in line and her husband was chatting with a friend of his, she told me that she has a lot of pain when the weather is humid and overcast (like it was at 9:20 this morning) because her neck was broken eight years ago, and added that her husband was well aware of her pain. Then she glanced at her "busy" husband and grinned at me. He finished his conversation and walked over, and she said  "So this is why you can't handle the market by yourself!"

I felt badly for her, but they were both super nice. I bought rainbow chard and carrots.

Cinnamon Rolls to kick off the new year

My plan is to post a photo of something I have cooked, baked, eaten, drooled over, etc. each day. I'm starting a bit late, but the first day of spring classes is a good jumping-off point, right?

Entry numero uno: [vegan, of course] cinnamon rolls. They look all crustified only because I iced them before realizing they could use an additional ten minutes in the oven.

This sugary ridiculousness is ideal after a long day at law school.
